“…but I gave them this command: Obey me, and I will be your God and you will be my people. Walk in obedience to all I command you, that it may go well with you.” Jeremiah 7:23 New International Version (NIV)
Sometimes it's easy to see when God answers prayers because it is largely independent of us. Whatever the situation we are praying for, does not rely on us to be obedient in any form other than talking to God. But what often happens when God is asking us to be his tools, we end up being too deaf, busy, or stubborn to listen.
Have you ever noticed the more you do something or utilize something the more you notice when it is missing or when other people share that? Much like when you get a new car and suddenly you notice everyone driving that same car. Or you name your child and think you are super unique (but not so much that they get teased just enough to make it hard to find their name in specialty stores) and then there are 20 people you meet with the same name! Prayer and obedience to God’s answers are the same way. The more you seek or utilize them the easier it is to identify. I would like to share with you something that happened recently.
As we prepared for our annual fundraising dinner, (huge success to be praised later) Katie had told me, in her kind and unassuming way, that basically I was supposed to invite someone to the dinner that God told me to. And she would not let it go. Well, I had asked several people that had come to mind as "partners" but it never stuck. So I started praying. For two weeks I prayed daily about this person I was supposed to invite to this dinner. And for two weeks God told me the same person. And I balked. "Surely not her God, I barely know her." This woman is a beautiful soul but I had met her at a very detrimental time in my life and a point at which I had started to learn to say no to things that were counterproductive to my mental, emotional and spiritual well-being. So opening that door again felt scary. But guess what? God got sick of my disobedience. The woman texted me out of nowhere saying she had felt led to reach out to me! And thank God she did! This woman was actually the answer to several prayers we had been praying for, and we are so thankful that she was obedient when I wasn't.
Is there a time you can think of that you were being nudged and didn't obey? How about one where you did. Maybe this month while thinking of all we are thankful for we spend a little extra time listening for God's whispering nudging before it has to turn into a swat on the rump.
Thank you for your continued prayer support.
God hears you.
