At one point in her life she had come to terms with the fact that she didn't know what she didn't know. And that she'd probably spend the rest of her life just fetching water.
As a young girl, she’d walk to the well to fill heavy buckets of water that would later be used for showers, laundry and cooking. Some would stop to say hello, but not everyone. Not everyone knew her, but at the same time, everyone knew her. Her story was everyone’s story. A story of hardship, of hunger, and of lack.
If you never see what's possible, how can you know that it even is? It's like having a bookshelf of full of only letters A-L encyclopedias and not knowing that there is more to the alphabet. You wouldn’t know that you’re missing 14 volumes of information, and you wouldn’t go searching for it. Unless someone showed you what you were missing.
Thankfully, someone did show her what was possible. She gained a sponsor six years ago, and she gained a window into the world. Her story was intersected by someone else’s story that was very different from her own. They wrote letters and got to know about each other’s lives. All of the sudden, her story was worth hearing, because it was now unique and special to someone else. She gained a sense of pride in who she was. She also saw someone’s story that was different from her own and saw that another way was out there.
On top of that, her sponsor provided her with education which opened even more doors for her. She was learning about other cultures, other places in the world, other stories. She was being introduced to others who looked like her, but who were educated, employed and successful. Now her hunger wasn’t just for food, but for more! A life that was better for herself, but also for those around her.
Fast forward six years, and you’ll find her in college where she is studying to become a nurse. She still fetches water from time to time. But now it's her turn to stop and say hello to another little girl who was once like her. And because her story is different, she’s allowing other little girls to see that their own story can be different too.
You have a story. And your story when shared has the power to let another little girl or boy see what is possible. For growth. For healing. For themselves and others.
